This Might Work.
I’m moving over to Substack for just a stretch. No content changes. It just looks a bit different.
Just for a recap: I’m Ryan McRae and I try to share the sci-fi and fantasy books that I really dig. I share other stuff. If you don’t dig this, you can just unsubscribe and we can part as friends.
What I’ve Read So Far. . . On a Cruise!
My partner and I went on a cruise and I grabbed some thrillers and action books:
The Gray Man by Mark Grainey (thriller! American assassin for hire!)
The Monkey’s Raincoat by Robert Crais (detective story set in Hollywood)
Tooth and Nail by Ian Rankin (Scottish crime story)
Now I know you are like, are you kidding me? None of that is fantasy.
I’m aware.
I just wanted to detach my fantasy brain for awhile. Since I’ve been studying fiction for a bit, I can be a snoot when it comes to fantasy and sci-fi. And I just wanted to detach my brain for a bit and read some books that are like a Pringles can: full of stuff that’s easy to digest (without the guilt of getting to the bottom of it.)
And it was great.
What am I Crushing Right Now?
This has been on my shelf for awhile and I’ve crushed it the past week. A young lady is recruited by her missing brother for a Supernatural agency that makes sure Supernatural creatures and humans get along. Where is her brother? And who is trying to break into the agency? And why is every single agent and trainee afraid of her?
Don’t hesitate and pick up Amari and the Night Brothers.
My FOMO is my Captain.
Whenever I hear a book recommended by three different people who are not connected (or sources), I tend to no-blink by the book. No-blink.
So I followed that rule, but I smashed another.
First, I digress. Here, step into this alley with me. Got a light? No. Another time. Anyway, I got burned by Patrick Rothfuss who wrote a good book and then a fair book and he never finished the trilogy. So when I realized the third book will never manifest, will never appear on a shelf where my goblin hands swipe it and devour it in a long forgotten cave—I made an oath.
I will never ever start a series that isn’t complete. Never ever.
But oh how that tablet has shattered.
Nobody will shut up about this book. I see it all the time like I’m in some Edgar Allen Poe story. And it’s book one, but I’m starting it tomorrow. It’s going deep and I mean deep in my earholes and eyesockets.
Sorry
. I’m breaking a pact we share.I’ll keep you posted.
Thanks for Sticking With Me
This email list has been for ADHD, Dungeons and Dragons and now fantasy and sci-fi. I hope you dig what I have to say. I have to say a bit more and I’m glad.
